Second Degree (2004)

Light sculpture

The Space Probe Voyager 1 is the man made object that has gone furthest away from Earth. Its main task is to collect scientific data but it also carries with it a record, the Voyager Golden Record, containing messages, greetings and pictures in case it will be found by some extraterrestrial intelligence someday in the future.

But how might this unknown intelligence reason? And how can we create, or find, an intelligent message?
Second Degree focuses on ways to communicate that we hope are the most logical. The lightbox blinks slowly, showing pictures, signs or codes simply through lamps turned on or off. The box shows approximately 260 different images and almost gives the impression of a machine designed for one-way communication. Here it is placed on a floor painted in a specific pattern resembling an ornament or playing field.
